Ideas Worth Spreading

About TEDx

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxYouth@RVA, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxYouth@RVA event, TED Talks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

TED is a gathering for the world's thinkers and doers to share ideas. TEDxYouth@RVA has the same spirit, but it's planned entirely by students to serve the greater Richmond region for a live community event. As an officially-licensed TEDx event, our team focuses on curating a world-class event for Richmonders here on a local stage.

This year’s event will be held on November 9, 2024.

Students working in partnership with adult TEDx mentors on TEDxYouth@RVA learn about the greater Richmond community. They immerse themselves in RVA, discovering creative and passionate individuals and organizations who envision never-before-seen possibilities and bring them to life. In order to choose whose ideas need to be shared, students must discover the diverse experiences and voices in all geographic parts of the greater Richmond region. Eventually, those talks enter the TEDx global community of free online talks, ensuring that RVA enters the global conversation of ideas in a meaningful way.

To curate TEDxYouth@RVA 2024, students discover people who dream big or think about wild ideas; people who find small ways to make a difference in the lives of others; maybe even people who fail big and learn from that failure. With individual and collective action, students build skills in all aspects of planning.

Meet the Organizers.

  • "There's something magical about TEDxYouth events - a forum for young people to actually get to make something real, that lives on. To do this work, there's a lot of mentoring, a lot of collaboration, and even more faith in the power of ideas."

    Rhiannon Boyd, Organizer

  • "The goal here is for everyone to see themselves in at least one of the speakers, and to leave thinking a little bit differently than they did before, or maybe thinking about something they've never thought about at all."

    Erica Coffey, Co-organizer
